Welcome to Digital Grits

So one day, perhaps today, you’ve woken up looked around and noticed how surrounded you are by technology and computers. Computers are in so many things now from your car to your TV.  And these computers are powerful in what they can do. For example most common cell phones have more computing power than the machines that took man to the moon believe it or not. Most kids today, even the toddlers are growing up with technology and access to information people from the baby boomer generation never dreamed of as kids.

With all of the techno this and that and latest gadgets and gizmos how do we sort it all out to see if it’s even useful? The answer is to embrace it. The fact that you are reading this means you’ve learned how to access the internet using some device and have learned to search for what you find interesting. Browsing the internet can be either a terrible time waster or wonderful resource of knowledge and wonder. As a child I spent many hours scouring through Encyclopedias which is a term seldom used these days. I also used to spend a lot of time at the public library just because I wanted to learn and gain knowledge. Today, one has only to browse to google.com, type in a few words and off you go into a world of good, bad and indifferent information.

Access to our friends and families is also easier today. With the right cell phone, your son or daughter can take a picture or even a video of the baby doing something for the first time and even though you could be separated by hundreds or thousands of miles, they can send it to your phone and you’ll have it within seconds. With the right equipment, you can even print the picture or display the video on your TV right from your phone. Using the program Skype (skype.com), you can connect for Free with friends from all over the world speaking to them and even see them using a small “Web” camera. Social Networks like Facebook (facebook.com) can help you connect with long lost friends and relatives and stay updated and in contact with them.

Like to read books? The days of buying actual bound books are a thing of the past and devices like the Kindle book reader and Apple iPad tablet PC can hold thousands of books. They can even hold hundreds of sets of Encyclopedias. People are now using these devices for newspaper and magazine subscriptions.
